Out of the Sea of Potentiality the First Earth emerges.

'In the beginning was chaos, like an ocean of oil or an egg, shapeless but seed-bearing. The Celestial Deities Izanagi and Izanami leaned over the floating bridge of Heaven and plunged the Celestial spear into the ocean of Chaos. They stirred it till the liquid coagulated whereupon they withdrew the spear and the drops of brine which fell from it formed the island Onogoro, The celestial couple then went down to the newly-formed island and made it the 'Central Pillar of the earth'.

The World Mountain that holds apart the Heavens and the earth

'After 18000 years chaos 'opened up'; the coarse heavy elements, yin, formed the earth; by contrast the light pure elements, yang, formed the sky. Every day the sky rose by ten feet. Ever day the earth grew deeper by ten feet. And every day P'an Ku found that his size had increased by ten feet, so that after 18000 years P'an Ku's body was as great as the distance between heaven and earth.

The Pillars of Heaven

'Arising in the midst of heaven and of earth and constituting the pillars of heaven I saw the winds which turn the sky and which cause the orb of the sun and of all the stars to set'
